Here is what some of the ADIs have said about their experience on the course - Amanda Fee "Well after spending yesterday on day 1 of the accelerate course with Terry I thought I would try putting into practice the bits I learnt. So my first lesson, a very nervous pupil who is always saying how this is so hard and I don't think I will ever be able to do this was unknowingly my first victim. Wow!!! What a difference!! Used SEDSS instead of core comps, everything we set out to do was done with more smiles and positivity. So the goal was set that if next weeks lesson goes as well as today she is going to drive home. All with transferable skills she already has. She said that this is the first time she has felt more happy about driving. I was beaming after I dropped her off because I also learnt a lot about myself today. The rapport building was great too! Thanks Terry, I can't wait to see what day 2 gives me. I feel rejuvenated in my work. Thank you! " Steve Walker "This was just what I was looking for to bring me 'up to speed' with the changes to client centred learning (coaching). It was more than I expected and I found all the comments really encouraging. I must admit, it had taken some courage for me to do this course. Probably because like most people, I don't enjoy being criticised but felt I would have to endure some criticism because none of us are perfect. What a surprise though, you quickly dispelled any fear of this and as a result I got much more out of the two days than I thought. I have now implemented the client centred learning and am actually finding that the lessons are more enjoyable for both the learner and as a result they are more productive. Thanks again, will be in touch soon to book more training." Calum Kerr "Thomas and I really enjoyed the 2 days, as you know, we saw the benefits, heard the positive comments and felt the need to develop as coaches (Is that all the Learning styles covered?) Fantastic course, assignments on their way soon! Cheers" aCCeLerate - The optional BTEC 3 Course Content This course gives you the opportunity to gain a BTEC Level 3 qualification if you choose to do the practical assignments. Module 1 This unit focuses on the use of feedback as a means of facilitating the development of both the driving instructor and the student driver. Different feedback techniques are examined and practised in a classroom context prior to the candidate experimenting with them in real-life driving situations. Self awareness and self responsibility are crucial when giving and receiving feedback so the emotional intelligence of the driving instructor in the coaching relationship is also explored. Driving is a task which involves a high level of reflection and self evaluation if it is to be carried out safely. The process of feedback facilitates the development of the student driver so that they can evaluate and reflect upon their driving when they are unsupervised. Research suggests that the process of reflection reduces crash involvement so that if a newly qualified driver is involved in a ‘near miss’ incident and has been coached to develop self evaluation skills, they will be able to reflect on this incident and determine how to prevent a similar one occurring in the future. This unit is the first of three units that comprise the qualification. Its content is addressed in the classroom through interactive exercises and group discussion and assessed through case study. Module 2 This unit focuses on the importance of effective communication in order to facilitate the development of safe, responsible drivers. Effective communication is all about a balanced, equal relationship between both parties: the driving instructor and the student, where communication is authentic, neutral and non-judgemental. The aim of effective communication is to encourage learner drivers to take responsibility for the driving task so that once they pass the driving test and are independent, they know how to self evaluate and avoid risky driving situations. Driving instructors will learn how to develop self evaluation skills in their learner drivers through the use of probing questions which tap into underpinning beliefs and values. Candidates will have the opportunity to discuss and experiment with a variety of communication techniques before practising these in a real environment, thus demonstrating that they have met the assessment criteria and the learning outcomes for the unit. The unit is the second of three core units in the qualification. Module 3 This unit focuses on the importance of structuring a coaching conversation during a driving lesson to achieve raised awareness and self responsibility on the part of the student driver. Coaching conversations can take place at several points throughout a driving lesson but will most often happen at the beginning when the goal(s) for the lesson are set. The aim of a coaching conversation is to ensure the ownership for the learning remains with the learner. Comparisons will be made with traditional driver training so that the benefits of coaching conversations can be measured. There will be emphasis on the delivery of a coaching conversation through essential coaching skills. Therefore, both the structure and the delivery of a coaching conversation are considered when holding a coaching conversation. Candidates will cover the content for this unit in a classroom / car environment where a model for structuring a coaching conversation will be explored. Practical application of this model will be assessed through the assignment which will be completed as part of a case study. This unit is the third of three core units that comprise the qualification. Frequently Asked Questions 1. How is the second day arranged? The time you get to complete the assignments is usually agreed between you and the trainer. People tend to take between 3 and 8 weeks. 11. Is there any support? Your trainer will support you in completing the assignments. You are invited to submit drafts for feedback and are welcome to email or ring your trainer if you have any queries. There is a workbook to support the course which contains all the information you need to help you complete the assignments. 12. How does the BTEC 3 differ from the BTEC 4? The BTEC Level 3 (equivalent in level to an 'A' Level qualification) consists of three units and takes two days to complete plus the assignments. The BTEC Level 4 is a higher level qualification (equivalent in level to first year of university) and consists of four units that take one year to complete. The BTEC Level 4 includes more theoretical information to support the practical application of the skills you are acquiring. 13. Do I have to do the BTEC 3 before I can do the BTEC 4? It is not necessary to complete the BTEC 3 before going onto complete the BTEC 4. It depends on the amount of time and money you want to invest. The BTEC 3 is sufficiently different from the BTEC 4 to justify you completing both qualifications if you wish. 14. Is it like Part 3 training? Some people have expressed concern about being in the car with other people and a trainer because they had a negative experience on their Part 3 training. aCCeLerate is nothing like Part 3 training. It is about developing your coaching skills in a safe and fun environment. 15. Do I have to use my own car? No the trainer supplies the vehicle. 16. How do I become a BTEC 3 trainer? Becoming an aCCeLerate trainer is a business opportunity that is available to anyone, who has completed the BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development and made an application. Successful applicants are expected to attend a two-day training course and take out a licence with Tri-Coaching. 17. Does the course cover the Standards Check? The course is very relevant to the Standards Check because it focuses on client-centred learning and coaching skills. However, it doesn't make direct reference to the Standards Check.
